Custom Architectural Metalwork
Carwash Roof Structure - San Francisco
Architectural metal work is site specific. Stairways, railings, mantelpieces, awnings and gates all have to be carefully dimensioned for shop fabrication unlike the structural framing elements which are erected and welded on site.
The steel trellises and railings on this new six unit condominium in San Francisco designed by Selander Architects give the building its Italian character. In order to to look substantial on this large building the architect required a large profile material, so a special thin wall tubing was used to minimize weight. After being fabricated and painted in the shop a crane was used to drop them into place over the finished stucco exterior.

The chance meeting of a welder and an architect who spent their weekends installing structural steel on muddy Bay Area hillsides resulted in a company they named Weekend Engineering. Special rigging was designed where cranes could not go and man power was key. On many of these projects when the framing was done metal railings would be considered, fireplaces surrounds, bathroom fixtures, pot racks and finally furniture turning Weekend Engineering into a full service metal fabrication shop.
Styled to be Exposed After Installation
We have enjoyed being part of the construction process from soup to nuts, we feel it creates a rapport among general contractor, sub contractors, architect and clients that adds to communication and flow of the overall project. Our repertoire still includes structural steel; moments frames, posts and beams and speedy custom hangers, straps roof connectors and other parts to keep the job on schedule.
