Railings

Residential and commercial railing dimensions are specified by the building code in your area. The California building code requires any residential landing, deck, ramp, porch or balcony over 36" from the ground to have a guardrail with spaces no larger than 4" in any direction. A building inspector must not be able to pass a 4" diameter ball through any opening in the railing. Commercial buildings require guardrail height of 42". The close spacing of pickets and horizontal members spelled out by the CBC requires more materials making it less transparent and more expensive than the railings of long ago which were thought to be safe with spacings as large as 9". As railings become safer they become more expensive to build. So when choosing a building material for your deck railing please keep this thought in mind.

Custom Ballet Barres

The San Francisco asked for portable handrails used as a point of support during ballet training and exercises (barre work). Barres are traditionally mounted on the wall. These had to be light, yet sturdy.

Mr. D. loves his new railings. Here we replicated in steel the original old wooden balcony railings which were falling into pieces from weather.

The chance meeting of a welder and an architect who spent their weekends installing structural steel on muddy Bay Area hillsides resulted in a company they named Weekend Engineering. Special rigging was designed where cranes could not go and man power was key. On many of these projects when the framing was done metal railings would be considered, fireplaces surrounds, bathroom fixtures, pot racks and finally furniture turning Weekend Engineering into a full service metal fabrication shop.

We have enjoyed being part of the construction process from soup to nuts, we feel it creates a rapport among general contractor, sub contractors, architect and clients that adds to communication and flow of the overall project. Our repertoire still includes structural steel; moments frames, posts and beams and speedy custom hangers, straps roof connectors and other parts to keep the job on schedule.
